Strength and Resilience

I can hardly believe it's almost the October break! This term has flown by in a wonderful whirlwind of new students, new classes, new skills, and new opportunities. However, that's not to say there haven't been challenges too!

I've absolutely loved the past couple of months in the studio. I find the majority of the August-October block is focused on settling back into classes after the long summer, re-establishing class structures and familiarising routines. Now we're almost at the October holidays, there's a sense of satisfaction seeing how settled our classes are now. Next week we have our Class Presentations and I'm so excited for all our dancers' families to see what's been achieved!

What I'm discussing today though, is strength and resilience. Recently I was invited by the University of Edinburgh to give a testimonial about my studies there and subsequent career. This in itself was an honour and an opportunity I would never have imagined or expected. In my testimonial, I talk about how I had to draw on resilience during my studies and how I strive to develop similar skills in my students today.

My main approach to running RMB Dance is to be led by my dancers, follow their interests, and find and grab opportunities with both hands. This term, this year in fact, we've been fortunate enough to enjoy some brilliant experiences. If you look on our social media pages, you can see the wonderful opportunities we've had!

But this term there have also been times where things haven't quite gone to plan, or opportunities have been rearranged at the last moment, and I think it's important to share the challenges as well as the successes. I'm sure any dance teacher would tell you that this is part of running a dance school. Sometimes things happen that are out of our control, and challenges are to be expected. What I want to show our dancers, and what I strive to develop in classes, is the importance of resilience. We acknowledge the feeling of disappointment, then look for the positives and keep going.

We have SO MANY positives and opportunities to look forward to in the next term, and I'm so proud of our dancers for not only embracing the opportunities but overcoming challenges too!
